Ever since my first viewing of Food Inc., my view—literally—of food has changed. Upon seeing a hamburger, an almost surreal vision ensues; I see a slaughtered cow, transgenic vegetables, and two slabs of something that could be considered bread. The men in white coats operating on this food within these visions are, truly, the most bizarre aspect.

I’ve never enjoyed preaching and especially when that preaching concerns the United States in particular. However, this is an issue that I do find disturbing and inexcusable. Will I buy an organic, free-range chicken for $9 more? No. Knowing is the first battle. Perhaps when this issue is greatly publicized, wide-spread changes may become easier. But, for now, this issue has to be tackled realistically, in that the general public must become more aware.

Industrialized Agriculture

Industrialized farming comes laden with several problems. Usage of steroids in animals to produce meat and other products has been a serious concern because whether or not these steroids affect the consumer is debated. Also, because the United States is able to produce food on such a large scale, its price has drastically dropped. This cheap food –normally—is the most genetically altered and processed. In American culture, price outweighs the nutritional value of food. Therefore, this genetically altered and processed food is the most consumed. Yes, there is a solution to this problem. To do away with subsidized farming and allow for such organic farms as the one presented in Food Inc. to prevail would solve several of these problems. The greatest concern is the monetary burden that may come with such agriculture. However, if this system is widely adopted throughout the entire country, it is unlikely that such an increase would occur.

Hello, it’s very nice to meet you. My name is Carl. Often, it is very difficult for me to keep interest in anything for more than a few years. However, recently Spanish guitars, the Spanish language, Spanish women, books of considerable size (in Spanish of course), Snowboarding, Joey Kocan, and Johann Sebastian Bach have occupied my attention for the past few years. I aspire to solve the nuclear fusion problem, solve the brain's mysteries, or farm grapes (no, seriously.) On the subject of Health, I would like to further investigate the effects of tar on the respiratory system as well as the perception changing effects of psychedelic drugs.
